A school year at an English boarding school
Tradition and modernity
At boarding schools in England, your child will acquire the English skills needed for a successful academic and professional future almost effortlessly. And despite the high academic standards, they will be able to pursue creative and sporting interests alike. Learning here is a holistic process that does not end with the school bell.
In Great Britain, as in no other country, schools combine tradition and modernity. Venerable boarding schools and centuries-old customs meet modern teaching methods, superbly equipped classrooms and a broad range of subjects. The concept of the all-day school combines academic and extracurricular activities in a special way.
British boarding schools are, of course, also especially well known to all Harry Potter fans. At a boarding school in Great Britain, children can make their dream of experiencing a little bit of Hogwarts come true.
Our advice on school years in England, Scotland and Wales
For 30 years, our team has been helping families find the best school for a stay at school in England, Scotland and Wales. We specialise entirely in British schools and not only have many years of experience as education consultants but also know Great Britain and the British school system in detail. The focus is always on you – the families and children themselves. Because only when we know your wishes, ideas and requirements precisely can we present you with the best choice of schools in England.
Our partner schools include private boarding schools. You can also choose between accommodation on the boarding school campus or with an English host family. With our help, the length of the stay can also be arranged flexibly: from a “taster term” to completing an entire school qualification in Great Britain.
We support you through every step of the planning and are on hand to answer your questions. With us, you have German-speaking contacts who can be reached at any time, including while your child is attending a school in England.
Choosing the right school
The choice of schools is large – but not every one is right for your child. That is why thorough advice is so important. In recent years, we have placed students at around 50 different day schools and boarding schools in England, Scotland and Wales and are in close contact with many other schools. In addition to outstanding education, our selected schools offer a wide range of sports and leisure facilities, ambitious support for talent in sport, music, art or drama, and at the same time individual language support for students from abroad. In our selection, we take into account, among other things, the length of stay, the size and geographical location of the schools, as well as academic goals and subject specialisation, leisure activities and school fees.
The British school year
The three terms at British boarding schools
The school year in England, Scotland and Wales is divided into three terms. Each lasts roughly three months, with a week’s holiday in the middle (half term). The periods can be divided up as follows:
- Autumn term – September to Christmas
- Spring term – January to shortly before Easter
- Summer term – Easter to early July
The best time to start is in the autumn term, but this is also when demand is highest. It can therefore make a lot of sense to start at the beginning of January or – depending on the year group – not until the summer term.
How much does a boarding school in England cost?
International Baccalaureate and A levels as a qualification
An international school qualification
Of course, it is possible to obtain a school qualification at a boarding school in England, Scotland and Wales as an alternative or in addition to qualifications at home. The following are particularly relevant:
- The English “General Certificate of Education at Advanced Level” (GCE A level), which is taken after 13 years of schooling. Provided certain subject combinations are observed, German universities recognise the qualification as a subject-restricted university entrance qualification (fachgebundene Hochschulreife).
- The International Baccalaureate (IB) offered by some British schools, also known as the international Abitur, makes international recognition easier thanks to its broader choice of subject combinations.
Recognition of school achievements in German-speaking countries
Especially if you want school achievements to be recognised on your return, the choice of subjects should be agreed with the head teacher at home and the school authorities. We will advise you on all the important questions.
