How to apply for the ETA

Before entry, the British authorities require online registration of the passport and issue applicants with a so-called ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation). This rule applies, among others, to citizens of all EU countries and Switzerland. The application should be made at least 3 working days before entry (a non-binding guideline based on experience). You can also apply for an ETA on behalf of other people; for example, parents can apply for their children.

Registration is possible via a mobile app or online. You can find more detailed information on the government website www.gov.uk: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/apply-for-an-electronic-travel-authorisation-eta

There you will find the link to the online application. Applying via the ETA app, which can be downloaded from the Google and Apple app stores, is somewhat easier, partly because you can see in real time whether the required digital photo of your face meets the specifications. The mobile registration can be carried out for all passports with a chip. You need a smartphone with an NFC function (near field communication), which applies to almost all newer phones. Important: you can also use a smartphone other than your own. No personal data is stored on the device, and the app can be deleted after a successful application.

The ETA currently costs 20 pounds. To apply, you need a credit or debit card, or alternatively Apple Pay or Google Pay. You also need access to an email inbox, to which a security code is sent during registration.

The decision is also sent by email. The ETA is then linked electronically to the passport. After a successful application, no additional document is required for entry.

It is valid for 2 years, unless you get a new passport in the meantime, which requires a new application before your next entry.

No details about the planned trip are requested in the application.

You can find all the information, always up to date, at www.gov.uk.
