Boarding schools in South West England
Learn where others go on holiday
With the counties of Devon and Cornwall, the south-west of England offers stunning landscapes. Many boarding schools are on the coast and therefore offer leisure activities such as surfing or ocean rowing. But you can also go to school near the famous Dartmoor.
Here we introduce some of the schools:
Boarding school on the Devon coast
Kingsley School
Kingsley School is a remarkably friendly place. The school is located in the small town of Bideford, near the Devon coast. The boarding school sees itself as an inclusive all-round school that supports and challenges young people of all abilities. The school’s educational provision also includes its own Dyslexia Centre for students with reading and spelling difficulties. Not least thanks to the good pastoral care in the boarding houses, the school succeeds in integrating international students quickly into the school community. The range of subjects is complemented by many leisure opportunities. Sports such as rowing and judo are offered to a high standard, and there is even a successful trampolining team.

A Harry Potter feeling on the edge of Dartmoor
Mount Kelly
Mount Kelly was founded in 1877 and is located in Tavistock, a small town on the edge of Dartmoor National Park in the south-west of England. The traditional boarding school is academically versatile and has a good pastoral care concept in its boarding houses. The architecturally impressive campus has very good facilities – such as a golf course and an adventure centre with its own climbing wall. The school is known beyond the country’s borders for its outstanding swimming and offers professional coaching for elite athletes as well as for amateurs. There is also a new 50-metre pool built to Olympic standard.

Family-style boarding school with a sea view
Trinity School
Trinity School is very attractively located in the small town of Teignmouth, right on the Devon coast. The school is housed in a former Catholic convent. The school grounds offer a fantastic view of the sea. It is therefore no surprise that sailing and rowing are among the school’s sports. Music and dance are also offered. Alongside the regular subjects, the timetable also includes vocational courses, known as BTEC qualifications – for example in art and design. The boarding community is small and very family-like.

Boarding school in the capital of Cornwall
Truro School
Truro School is located in the cathedral city of the same name in the far south-west of England. The boarding school was founded in the 19th century and is very popular with students whose interests include art and music. The school’s own Burrell Theatre hosts productions by the drama group as well as concerts, and the choir sings regularly in the cathedral. In Cornwall you are never far from the sea, so it is no wonder that the school offers a wide range of beach and water activities, not least surfing and sailing. Fencing is also offered to a high standard. The boarding community is small and is run in a very personal and committed way.
