Learning English in “London by the Sea”

Language school Brighton

Brighton is one of the most popular destinations for language courses abroad and language stays in England. Every year, language students from all over the world are drawn to this lively coastal city.

Brighton is in the south of England in the county of East Sussex, only about two hours from London.

The resort is also known as “London by the Sea” because many Londoners head to the seaside town at the weekend. Yet – apart from their popularity and central location – the cities could not be more different.

Compared with the global metropolis, Brighton is a manageable place, much less noisy and stressful; everyone here is a little more relaxed and laid-back.

On a language course abroad in Brighton, you can expect quirky art, a charming small city centre with winding lanes, lots of offbeat shops and cool restaurants and pubs.

You could say Brighton is the rebel among English cities.

The city is so popular with language students not least because of its beautiful promenade and the famous “Brighton Pier”. What could be better than a walk on the beach after a successful English lesson, with the smell of popcorn and candyfloss in the air?

Leisure activities in Brighton

Must-see

Foodie paradise

Anyone visiting Brighton can hardly miss the city’s best-known landmarks. Brighton Pier has existed for more than a century, and its rides are open all year round. Here you immediately feel transported back to your childhood.

Another Brighton landmark that you should not miss under any circumstances is the Royal Pavilion. The Pavilion was built in the style of an Indian Mughal palace and is the pride of the city. Only a 5-minute walk from the beach, the palace stands in a park where you can listen to talented street musicians at any time of day.

If you fancy experiencing a bit of history, you can marvel at the world’s first electric railway in Brighton - which, mind you, is still in working order.

Volk’s Electric Railway is just the thing for fans of nostalgia.

If you want to enjoy nature, the nearby South Downs National Park is perfect. It is home to the “Seven Sisters” cliffs and some of the most charming villages in the south of England. Here you can go hiking or explore wonderful beaches. The neighbouring towns are easy to explore by bus.

But you do not even have to leave Brighton to enjoy nature. The seafront promenade, several kilometres long, is wonderful for long bike rides.

Or simply stroll through the winding “Lanes” and explore the colourful facades, shops and restaurants.

Paradise for “foodies”

Music hotspot

Brighton is a great destination for anyone who loves healthy and delicious food! The choice of restaurants is huge, including above all a variety of vegetarian and vegan specialities.

North Laine is lined with bars, cafés and cosy little restaurants – this is where Brighton’s “alternative scene” hangs out. If you have some time after a successful English lesson, sit down somewhere in North Laine and take a moment to soak up the city and its people. There is always something to see here!

The Laines also have by far the best coffee. There are numerous beautifully minimalist coffee houses with their own roasteries; Bond St. Coffee, for example, guarantees excellent coffee with Scandinavian charm.

If you prefer the classics when it comes to food and drink, you will of course also find traditional “fish & chips” restaurants and quaint British pubs.

Treasure shopping

Crazy about fashion

If you like the somewhat offbeat style of the city’s residents, go hunting for real vintage treasures. For true professionals and flea market lovers, “Snoopers Paradise” in North Laine is a must. In the warehouse in the winding Laines, alongside kitschy crockery and old jewellery, you will find above all crazy clothes and retro cameras – all at very affordable prices. On Saturdays there is a huge flea market and the shops turn into a kind of marketplace. But this unique quarter is not the only place with all kinds of shopping. In Brighton’s two shopping centres, Churchill Square Shopping Centre and Marina Square, you can also happily pass the time shopping.

Creative hotspot

Art is free

Brighton’s unique music scene is characterised on the one hand by the huge range of concerts and artists Brighton has to offer, and on the other by the renowned university BIMM (Brighton Institute of Modern Music) – where artists such as James Bay, George Ezra, Tom Odell and The Kooks were trained.

Every day there are countless concerts all over the city, most of them even free in bars or simply on the street. Brighton’s special flair thrives on music, and that is exactly why more and more artists are drawn to the colourful city by the sea.

In summer, Brighton’s creativity unfolds in full in the form of numerous festivals. The whole city is out and about, and the cultural programme is unbeatable.

The newcomer festival “The Great Escape” and the “Brighton Fringe” always offer, in addition to the ticketed part, theatre, comedy, performance or concerts around the city for a small fee or even for free. The Brighton Festival is even England’s largest cultural festival - with theatre, singing and readings at various venues.
