Summer in Bournemouth

A South Seas feeling in England

The golden sandy beach, more than 11 km long, is a real gem of England. This stretch of coast has been voted England’s most beautiful beach several years in a row and even ranks among the most beautiful beaches in Europe. Anyone who thinks you cannot spend a summer holiday in England is very much mistaken. Bournemouth is not a typical English town as you might imagine it. With the most sunny days of the year, you can spend almost every day on the beach here. Where better to learn English vocabulary than on the beach under a bright sky, to the sound of the sea? The surrounding beaches in the Dorset region also have a South Seas flair and invite you to relax. Many of the smaller bays are surrounded by steep cliffs and make quiet retreats in the high season.

Most language schools are in the town centre and only a few minutes from the beach. So the lunch break or the free afternoon - depending on the course model - can be spent with your feet in the sand.

You do not have to travel far to find your language course with a South Seas feeling.

Impressions of Bournemouth

Accommodation at our language schools

Our partner schools in Bournemouth give you a free choice of accommodation. At all language schools, you can stay with a host family or in a residence.

The host families are vetted by the schools and usually have many years of experience in hosting language students. This is the most affordable form of accommodation, with the added advantage that at least half board is usually included.

Host families are particularly recommended for children, because they receive more family-style care and ideally even make friends with the family’s children. And of course, a host family means constant contact with native speakers, which is the best way to internalise the English language.

Accommodation in residences, on the other hand, offers more flexibility and allows language students to make friends with people from all over the world. Some language schools have their own residences where only language students live, while other partner schools work with the university in Bournemouth and accommodation is in student halls of residence.

In the residences, language students have their own bedroom and share the bathroom and kitchen with flatmates.

If you prefer to stay in a hotel or a “bed and breakfast” during your language stay, you are also free to choose that. We and the language school on site can also help you choose a hotel in Bournemouth.

Activities in Bournemouth

Sightseeing

Foodie paradise

The coastal town has some sightseeing highlights to offer, most of which can easily be reached on foot from our partner schools in no more than 15 minutes. An obvious “must-see” in Bournemouth is, of course, the pier, which has stood since 1880 and where you can stock up on souvenirs and ice cream.

As well as its glorious beaches, Bournemouth is also known for its special gardens. Visitors can explore over 800 hectares of gardens. The gardens are divided into three areas: the Lower, Central and Upper Gardens. Plant life from Europe, Asia and North America is displayed there.

Nature lovers should on no account miss a trip to the Jurassic Coast. This stretch of coast has been a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site since 2001 and is guaranteed to take your breath away on a tour.

If going by land is too boring for you, you can admire the coast from the sea on one of the many boat trips.

Culture and cuisine

Music hotspot

After a stroll through the gardens or a hike along the Jurassic Coast, the many cafés and restaurants in Bournemouth invite you to taste fresh seafood or the traditionally made cheese of the region.

Besides delicious food, Bournemouth is known above all for its festivals. Whether it is the Bournemouth Wheels Festival, the Bournemouth Food and Drink Festival or the Bournemouth Air Festival - there is something for every visitor.

For true art lovers, there is the Bournemouth Arts by the Sea Festival every year. You can easily time your language course abroad so that you can experience one of Bournemouth’s great town festivals.

Water sports

Crazy about fashion

In and around Bournemouth there are numerous opportunities to surf. Anyone who cannot surf yet will have no problem finding a surf school - there are more than enough of them there.

For experienced surfers, there are great surf spots in the area, most of which can also easily be reached by bus from Bournemouth.

Apart from classic surfing, you can also go kitesurfing and windsurfing or even diving on the south coast of England. Taster diving courses are even available at relatively affordable prices, while full diving qualifications are of course quite a bit more expensive.

Bournemouth is definitely a real water sports paradise. If you prefer something a little more relaxed, you can, for example, hire a kayak on the beach and go exploring the sea.

Nightlife

Art is free

The town of Bournemouth has plenty to offer when it comes to nightlife. The student town has numerous bars, pubs and clubs. The nice thing about going out in the coastal town is that the bars and venues have an international mix of English holidaymakers as well as students and language students from all over the world. The cultural mix quickly becomes noticeable: besides traditional British pubs, there are also salsa bars, for example. There is also live music on many corners. So you could not possibly call the coastal town quiet. The lively mix of cultures and age groups makes a trip to Bournemouth a special experience.

Our personal recommendation for a successful evening in Bournemouth is to watch the sunset by the sea in one of the beach bars.
