Language diploma for studying in English
IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
For effective IELTS test preparation, it helps to know how the test works and how it is scored. IELTS is offered in two versions, a general and an academic version. The IELTS exam was also developed under the leadership of the University of Cambridge. It rates active and passive language skills on a scale of 0-9. Universities worldwide set a certain minimum score as a language entry requirement for their degree programmes, especially in Great Britain, Ireland and Australia. Australia also requires the general IELTS exam for every non-native speaker who wants to work in the country.
The general version is aimed at people who need proof of their English skills for work or immigration.
The academic version is in much greater demand and is aimed at students who want to study at an English-speaking university or on an international degree programme at a German university and need to prove their language skills to do so.
IELTS test preparation is similar to preparation for the Cambridge certificates. The test covers the usual four areas, which are tested one after the other in different sections, and takes about three hours. First, listening comprehension is tested in 40 minutes using various recordings, with 40 questions. Reading and writing are then each tested in one hour. Various texts are used as a basis, on which questions have to be answered or the candidate’s own texts written. For the academic IELTS, these are chosen with reference to university study. Speaking is tested last in a session of about a quarter of an hour. Here, in three parts, personal interests are discussed with an examiner, a given topic is presented and a short discussion is held.
IELTS test dates are offered almost every week. To give you the best possible IELTS test preparation, we arrange the best language courses at English language schools.
IELTS candidates can view their results online two weeks after their test date. At the same time, a certificate (IELTS Test Report Form) is sent to them by post. The test results are valid for two years and are on a scale of 1-9, where 1 stands for virtually no skills and 9 for fluent English. For most universities, a score of 6.5 or 7 is the minimum standard. 7.0 corresponds to CEFR level C1.
